Quinn Canyon, Lincoln County
There are two variations of the same story about what is called "The Quinn Canyon Massacre." In the spring of 1866, after stealing and running off stock from the area, twelve + Southern Paiutes were hunted down by either a possie of civilians or a US cavalry unit and shot to death (with the exception of one wounded escapee). Apparently, the wounded young Indian was adopted by local residents and lived a full life. His name is recorded as "One-Arm Bob."
Probable area of massacre
Another Interesting Subject at Quinn Canyon Are the Stone Sentinels (stone dummies or cairns):
According to archeologist Robert Hafey from Rachel, ancient Native American Indians hunted by hiding behind piles of rocks overlooking game trails and water holes. Sometimes the hunters would attach poles to the cairns and move them attracting the eye of the potential target. The movement or fluttering coming from the rock mounds would help to keep the game confined to the canyons or hill area. Most of the mounds are at least two feet in height. To date, we have found three separate areas in Lincoln County with these man-made rock mounds.
